Get Into The Right Headspace For Your Next Event

If you’re in a bad headspace, it can affect almost every aspect of your life, including your ability to enjoy an event you’ve been looking forward to. No matter how much fun the event may be, sometimes we struggle to leave our negative thoughts and energy behind so we can enjoy ourselves. At Yogamigos, we believe the secret to getting into the right headspace before an event is mindfulness exercises and meditation. We’re here to show you how mindfulness works to rid you of your negative thoughts so you can be present in every moment.

What Is Nervous Energy Doing To Your Mind And Body?

Nervous energy is something everyone experiences throughout their lives. It’s just your body’s natural response to stress, and it causes a few hormonal and physiological changes that create that uncomfortable jittery feeling.

  • Your body produces adrenaline. When you feel nervous about something, your brain releases cortisol, the flight or fight hormone. Your brain tells your body that there’s a threat of some kind looming, and your body prepares itself to handle the danger.
  • Your body begins to react. Almost instantly, your heart beats faster, your blood pressure rises, you begin to sweat, and your breathing quickens, making you hyper-alert.
  • You’ll feel distracted. Because your brain has you on the lookout for threats, you may find it difficult to focus on having a good time with your friends and family. You’ll be alert to your surroundings, but you won’t be able to centre yourself in the moment.
  • You may become tired very quickly. As you can imagine, all this psychological and physiological exertion will make you very tired. No matter how nervous you are, your body will soon recognise there is no threat, and it will begin to relax. You’ll find yourself feeling drained and exhausted, and if you’re too tired, there’s no chance you’ll be able to enjoy your event!

How Can You Rid Yourself Of Pre-Event Jitters?

Yogamigos offers private mindfulness sessions, where we send a mindfulness instructor to you to help you relieve your nervous energy.

  • Meditation. When it comes to mindfulness versus meditation, there are some key differences, but both practices work best when used together. When we practice meditation regularly, we become more mindful in our everyday lives by extension. Mindfulness is becoming aware of things you’re experiencing in that moment, whereas meditation is more about concentration and clearing the mind. Your Yogamigos mindfulness instructor will provide you with some excellent meditation techniques to get you on the right track.
  • Stretching. When you stretch, you’re ridding your muscles of tension and stress, thereby allowing your body to relax. Stretches are a big part of our Yogamigos mindfulness sessions, and we’ll teach you stretches you can use as part of your everyday routine.
  • Breathing. Deep, intentional breathing is a cornerstone of mindfulness practice. It helps to oxygenate the body, slow the heart rate, and bring your mind back to the current moment. If you’re ever wondering how mindfulness works, a large part of it is deep breathing exercises. Your Yogamigos teacher will introduce you to some simple breathing exercises and demonstrate how mindfulness helps when you’re feeling nervous.

3 Quick Mindfulness Exercises You Can Do Throughout Your Event To Keep Calm

If you’re at your event after your Yogamigos mindfulness class and you feel those nervous, jittery feelings creeping back in, you can practice mindfulness in 5 minutes with these quick exercises.

  • Positive affirmations for yourself. Take yourself to a quiet place (the toilet will do!) and seat yourself comfortably. Choose some positive affirmations for yourself, such as ‘I am capable and confident’, ‘happiness comes naturally to me’, or ‘I feel at peace’. If you can’t think of any, a quick Google search will give you some inspiration. After you’ve settled on a few affirmations, close your eyes and imagine yourself sitting in a large, warm ray of sunlight. Imagine the light filling you with complete physical and emotional wellness and peace. Repeat the phrases to yourself while embracing the warm sunshine.
  • Hand awareness. This mindfulness exercise is straightforward and can be done in any social setting. Clench your fists tightly for five seconds and then release, noticing how your hands feel. Try to notice the feelings for as long as possible, bringing yourself back to the moment. Keep clenching and noticing for as long as you need to.
  • Listen to the musicPut on one of your favourite songs or listen to the song you can currently hear. Pay attention to the lyrics, the beat, the rhythm, and notice how this piece of music makes you feel. What emotions are you experiencing? Did any memories surface, and how did they make you feel? If you need to do it for the next song, keep going until you feel grounded and content.
